Student Success Statement

Your Future is created by what you do today, not tomorrow”
Robert Kiyosaki

This statement is conveying how you create your future every day; you don’t do it tomorrow but today. A great example would be finishing your work in school and just literally doing good in all your classes, because once you start doing good you’re aiming for “Graduation” but once you start doing the wrong things your future is collapsing little by little, even if you don’t see it right away. It’s always good to reflect every day because sometimes we don’t realize what we are doing wrong. You’re creating your future so choose wisely on your decisions.

SQ3R: A great Reading and Studying Technique

Improve Your Study Skills
SQ3R stands for:                         Survey
                                                         Question
                                                         Read
                                                         Recite
                                                         Review

It is a proven technique to sharpen your study skills.
In college, you’ll be required to do lots of reading. You’ll often have to complete reading assignments in several different books for several different courses at the same time.
SQ3R helps make reading and studying purposeful and effective, so that you use your time most efficiently. Here’s how this strategy works.

Survey

Let’s say your assignment is to read one chapter. First, get an idea of what the chapter is about by reviewing and highlights:
  • ·      Read the tittle, headings and subheadings.
  • ·      Notice words that are italicized or bold.
  • ·      Look at charts, graphs, pictures, maps and other visual material.
  • ·      Read captions.
  • ·      Read the very beginning and end of the chapter.

NEVER
“There is no justification ever for choosing any part of what you know to be evil.”

Ayn Rand

(Novelist, Philosopher, Playwright, Screenwriter)

I agree with this statement because many times we justify things that we know for some reason is wrong, we always try to twist the situation and lie about it. I have been in a situation when I had to lie because I wanted something. Or also when you know it’s the bad thing to do and you still do it and then later on you try to justify what you did, it’s just literally so wrong. We should learn to stop justifying things that we know aren’t true; choosing the right its better than being in the wrong path.

Tip 5: Keep a list of Questions
When you feel confused about something you’re reading, write down any questions you have. Sometimes your questions are answered as you read further. If not, don’t be afraid to ask for help. Remember, teachers create assignments; they’ve read the texts and are familiar with them. When you have specific questions, your teachers can provide answers that will help you better understand the material. Learning is rooted in questions developed and asked by the learner.
Asking questions to yourself, to the teacher, and to others, is great, earning method. When you cease to ask questions, you cease to exist to a great extent. Read actively by silently asking questions as you read. Questioning immerse you into the material you are reading and therefore will expand your mental capacities more than almost anything else.
The philosopher Sir Francis Bacon said “Knowledge is power”. Improving your reading comprehension is the key to gaining important knowledge and making the most of your education. So pick up a book… and a pen.

“When I was teaching basketball, I urged my players to try their hardest to improve on that very day, to make that practice a masterpiece. This rule is even more important in life than basketball. You have to apply yourself each day to become a little better each and every day over a period of time; you will become a lot better. Only then will you be able to approach being the best you can be. It begins by trying to make each day count and knowing you can never make up for a lost day.”
John Wooden

I agree with this statement because you have to put your best once you join a sport. It all depends on you if you want to put enough effort to improve yourself and manage to do your best.  Sometimes it’s hard to keep up going every day and we make excuses where we managed to not go, I believe that once you join something is because you liked it, that’s why you’ll be trying to do your best and you’ll get better each day by being there and participating. Hang out with people that will motivate you to do your best, choose the right.

Tip 3: Do Research
Literacy critics have written vast numbers of analytical and critical pieces on countless books. If you’re having trouble understanding a particular text, do some research and see what knowledgeable sources have to say about it. In addition to increasing your comprehension, you’ll also be showing initiative, something teachers always like to see. Always use legitimate and scholarly sources, not condensed study guides. Going the extra mile in your research elevates your achievement 10-fold.

Tips 4: Use a Dictionary
Make sure you have access to a dictionary when you’re reading. You can often figure out the meaning of an unfamiliar word by using context clues, but sometimes you can’t. Rather than simply skipping over the words you don’t know, take the time to look them up. The results are well worth the effort. Your comprehension will increase greatly, and you’ll build your vocabulary at the same time.

The Three Don’ts
Don’t Whine
Don’t Complain
Don’t make excuses
John Wooden

This statement portrays the three don’ts you shouldn’t do in order to have a successful life. At times it may be hard to stop something you’ve already started, but I believe that once you start something sooner or later you’re going to do it again, as long as you’re very committed to do something. I believe in people that believe in themselves, the people that surpass their struggles.  It’s always to never something bad because you’ll fall into doing it again. Don’t complain that something is going bad instead do something about it instead of just whining and making up nonsense excuses.

3. Set Attainable Goals
If you’re having trouble writing a 25-page paper for class because it seems like such a big job, don’t focus on the final number. Break the paper down and consider each section of your paper individually. You can handle any project in small chunks.

4. Find a Social Support Network
Create a group of people around you who want to help you succeed. Mentors can be teachers or family friends who can give you guidance and help you develop new skills. Counselors can help you with planning your courses and starting to explore colleges. You can also reach out to friends and peers who can motivate you by listening and sharing ideas.

5. Acknowledge Your Accomplishments
Give yourself a quick reward when you complete an assignment or task. Take a walk, send an email, get a snack. Then move on to the next project.

“The Three Nevers”
Never Lie
Never Cheat
Never Steal
John Wooden

This statement by John Wooden conveys how never lying, never stealing and never cheating can make your life much better. These three “never” makes you choose the right at all times. Once one start to cheat or to lie or steal something it becomes a habit and one see it as an easy way than to actually be honest to yourself. One example would be cheating during an exam, it’s always better when you study and you’re ready to portray the thing you’ve learned than cheating and getting a grade foe something you didn’t do. Stay true yourself and never do something that will embarrassed you later on, choose the right at all times and you’ll see the difference it makes. You know the way of your path, make it right.

5 Tips for Studying Motivated

5 Tips for Studying Motivated
Tips 1-2

http://www.collegebboard .com/student/plan/boost-your-skills8454.html

To succeed in high school and college, you have to do your best at all times. But sometimes it’s hard to stay motivated, even when you really care about the work you're doing. Here are five ways to stay on the right track.

1.    Focus on High-Impact Activities.
The key to success in school is staying focused on your course work. Make a list to get an overall picture of your workload before you start to tackle any of it. Then, make a plan. Although it’s tempting to do the simplest assignments first, those that take more time and effort to accomplish are probably the ones that you’ll learn the most from.
To determine what your priorities are, rank your assignments in the order of their importance. Then rearrange your time and devote more energy toward those that have the greatest impact on your coursework and grades. For example, even though all homework assignments are important, studying for a midterm exam takes priority over writing a paragraph for English class. As you complete each task, think of it as another step on your way to college success.

2.   Create New Challenges
Changing your approach can help you stay interested in what you're doing. If you've been given an assignment similar to one you’ve done in the past, think about it in a different way. If you wrote an essay for a creative writing assignment last year, try a poem this time. For book reports, pick a history book instead of another biography.

“You have only always to do what is right. It will become easier by practice, and you enjoy in the midst of your trials the pleasure of an approving conscience.”
Robert E. Lee

This statement by Robert E. Lee conveys how if you continue to do the right things everyday it will become a habit. Sometimes it’s hard to keep doing something all over again, but we have to learn that through practice it will become much easier; it might be hard at the beginning but at the end it will always be worth it. A great example would be always doing the right things in school such as graduating. And by graduating you have to do your classwork, homework, participate, collaborate, study etc., but at the end when you become someone in life and you’re receiving enough money to desire what you want you will never regret all the hard work you put into it.

Take Advantage of Any Free Time
If you have as study period or a long bus ride, use the time to review notes, prepare for an upcoming class or start your homework. Flash cards are a great learning tool. They are easy to make, easy to handle, and have a marvelous tool to help you learn and remember anything. Punch a hole in the upper left corner of each index card and connect the stack of your flash cards with a ring. Then the cards are bound and not flopping around. Flash cards bound like this act like a small book with pages. You can even have separate ringed stacks for each subject. WHATEVER YOU WANT TO REMEMBER, PUT IT ON A CARD.

Studying with a Friend
Get together with friends and classmates to quiz each other, compare notes and predict test questions. Consider joining a study group.

Communicate
If you have concerns about the amount or type of homework you have, you may want to talk to your family, teachers or counselor. They can help you understand how much time you need to allot for homework and how to manage your tasks.
Celebrate Your Achievements
Reward yourself for hitting milestones or doing something well.

“Be always sure you’re right, then go ahead.”

Davy Crockett
1786-1836

This statement conveys how every time you want to achieve something you’ve to make sure that it’s the right thing to do. In many cases we have told to do something but at a certain point we doubt about it and we are not really sure if we should do it or not. But always think positively in order to know you’re choosing the right things.  For example when it comes to a problem it’s always good to tell the truth then to lie about it because it just gets even worse.  Always follow your heart and you will always find the right answer to do.

Keep Things in Perspective
Know how much weight each assignment or test carries, and carries, and use your time accordingly. Don’t waste time, but be wise and smart. Doing the most important things first is being wise and smart.
Get More Involved
Keep your mind from wondering by taking notes, underlining sections, discussing topics with others or relating your homework to something you’re studying in another class. Learn actively and not passively. Be anxiously engaged in your studies and you will have a great experience. Demonstrating a good attitude toward home assignments, and you will begin to love doing it.
Organize the Information
People process information in different ways. Some people like to draw pictures or charts to digest information, others prefer to read out loud or make detailed outlines. Try to find the methods that work best for you. Ask your teacher for recommendations if you’re having trouble.

“Character is higher than intellectual”
Ralph Waldo Emerson.

This statement conveys how character is better than intellectual, because in life there are many people that are ignorant and they make other people feel less. That’s why it’s better when a person is high in character meaning as being tolerant because it shows a lot from their personality. An example would be working with other people that are always in a bad mood that’s just something that we have to surpass in order to be a CTR person.

Take Control of Homework Part 1

Although very few students love homework, it does serve a purpose. Homework helps you:
  • ·     Reinforce what you've learned during the day.
  • ·     Build study habits that are essential in college.
  • ·     Prepare for your classes.
  • ·     Get a sense of progress.

Here are some tips to help you deal with homework more efficiently and effectively.
Set the Mood
Create a good study area with everything you need (for example, a calculator). If you don't have a quiet place at home, try your school or local library.
Know Where to Begin
Make a list of everything you need to do, and note all deadlines. Do the more difficult assignments first, so you don't have to face them at the end.
Study at the Same Time Every Day
Even if you don't have homework every night, use the time to review notes. If sitting down to work is part of your normal routine, you'll approach it with less dread. Also, you'll become a pro at using time productively.

“I think it better to do right, even if we suffer in so doing, than to incur the reproach of our consciences and posterity”

Robert E. Lee

This statement conveys how it is always right to do the right things even if we have to suffer for a certain time, at the end it will always be worth it. In life there are many obstacles that we have to overcome and most of the times they will be hard to surpass, but with willingness we will achieve it. A great example would be going to school, many students don’t take school seriously but some do, and once you graduate you’ll see how your effort will pay you everything you’ve done to accomplish what you wanted.

For Review
Once you’ve done all of the above, you'll find you’ve created your own personalized study guide. Cover the main section of the page and use the key words and questions in the left margin as a quiz.
Stick to it
Review your notes the day you take them and all your notes once a week. That way, you won't need to study as much when its test time.
You've been doing the work all along. Try out the Cornell system but if it doesn’t work for you, experiment with other methods. Ask your classmates how they take notes or ask a teacher for advice. Taking good notes requires practice, like any other skill. And the more you work at it now, the more prepared you'll be to take notes in college.

Tony Farmer was one of the most highly-recruited high school basketball players in Ohio. But on Tuesday he went to court because he was accused from kidnapping his girlfriend but not only that he had also had committed other crimes that it made his sentence for three years. He was in shock when he found out that he was going to prison for three years. I believe that he shouldn't have done that because he had a future ahead he should of never threaten the reporters and kidnapped his girlfriend. He choose the wrong and now he’s paying for it.

After Class:
As soon as class ends, review your notes and fill in any blanks. Underline, highlight and use symbols to sort through the information. If you don’t understand something, get help from your teacher or classmates.

After you have reviewed all your notes from class, in the left-hand area of the page write down key words and questions your teacher might ask on a test.

At the bottom of each page, write a summary of the notes. This helps you digest what you’ve learned. It also improves your memory of the material for the long term and for the tests down the road.

“He listens well who takes notes.”
Dante Alighieri

This statement conveys how if you’re a good listener you will achieve more things. Because when someone wants to be successful in life they have listen and write things down in order to recall later on and imply them with other people. When you listen and you take notes you’re helping yourself because you remind yourself in case you have forgotten something you can always go back and learn it again. A great example would be during school, in mostly all our classes we take notes but we have to learn to be a good listener in order to take good notes. Being a good listener and a taking good notes can make us become a better person in the future.

During Class

One approach that has been proven effective is called the Cornell Note-Taking System. Here are some of its methods. Start by using the main section of your page to take down your notes during class. Be sure to leave space on the left side of the page and the bottom. Things to keep in mind:
1.       Get the speakers main points. Don’t write down every word you hear.
2.      Leave blanks in your notes to add explanations later.
3.      Organize as you write. Pay attention to clues such as repetition and emphasis.
4.     Indicate main and supporting points as you go.
5.      Jot down key vocabulary, important facts and formulas.
6.     Ask questions. If you’re confused, it’s better to ask while the material is fresh in your mind.

  • ·        Date and number pages; keeping them in order makes it easier to understand them later.

Before class
Review the material assigned for that class period thoroughly. Bring a list of any questions you may have.

“Tell me what is right and I will fight for it.”
Woodrow Wilson

This statement means that you have to fight for what’s right, you don't have to let yourself for something that you're against it. We have to learn to stand up for ourselves and it doesn't literally mean to actually fight or punch someone on the face but to speak and say your opinion. A great example would be voting because if you don't vote you're not voting for what’s best for you and at the end you'll probably regret it because what if somebody else wins just because you didn’t vote. It’s always great to let other people know what we think, and fight for the things that are worth in our lives.
